The King of Bombs
March 24th, 2007 | Category: video, technologyStraying away from the trash that I have been posting these days, I thought we could all use a little lesson in Soviet Nuclear History. The largest bomb ever detonated was called the “TSAR BOMBA” (King of Bombs) on October 30, 1961. This bomb had an estimated yield of about 50 megatons (it’s alot, trust me…).
The bomb alone weighed 27 tonnes. It was equipped with a parachute to slow down the descent so it wouldn’t incinerate the plane dropping it. It was dropped at 11:32am over the Mityushikha Bay nuclear testing range north of the Arctic circle. The heat from the explosion would have caused 3rd degree burns up to 100km from the detonation site. The mushroom cloud was about 60km high and 30-40 km wide, and the explosion could be seen and felt as far as Finland.
We can thank Wikipedia for being a great source of information. Enjoy the show.
